The impact of the Corona Virus pandemic is said to have been one of the worse in business history. Business Insiders reported that Federal Reserve economists had estimated that in recent years about 600,000 US businesses close permanently each year, however, a Fed study found that the pandemic had resulted in an additional 200,000 permanent closures of businesses over pre-pandemic levels.

As for most businesses, the current crisis meant pivoting and adapting or reducing in size or unfortunately closing. For the company in question, it was no different. Relying on in-person events as a primary business acquisition model meant pivoting…and pivoting fast. 

Thankfully we found a solution for them and we were able to build a robust system and strategy that would allow them to explode their business in record time, through the pandemic and amidst the IOS 14 updates and now we want to share that with you too! 
The reality is that launching a new offer, proving it, optimizing, and scaling does not happen overnight - It all comes in stages. While the company in question was able to rapidly grow, there were a lot of moving pieces and optimization that happened in the background.

1: START WITH THE OFFER!

I can't stress enough the importance of testing. I’m not talking about just creative testing which is what most advertising agencies will focus on but truly optimizing and testing at all stages of your marketing. 

When this offer was first launched we started with price point testing. We knew the end goal was to make things scalable but we also needed to find a happy medium that would allow us to profit and get enough volume to push for back-end sales. 

Our goal was not to profit off the front end but more so to get enough volume of registrations that would allow profit in the backend. We tested 4 different price points starting from $17 up to $97. 

Here’s how we approached testing using our Pricing Testing Framework:

  • Setting up the campaign structure for rapid testing
  • Speed up testing at scale through audiences 
  • Used test insights to build ads that are ready to scale
  • Keeping ads as a control across each test

2: THE FACEBOOK ADS MAGIC STRATEGY

The harsh truth: there’s none

I know…it seems obvious. But If you guessed it then you're ahead of most! 

There are so many Facebook advertisers and business owners that struggle to achieve consistent results because they are always in search of the next magic strategy to turn around their campaigns, even when it’s not the “ads fault”!

The truth is that in today’s day and age with as many courses and artificial intelligence (AI), the barrier of entry to advertise on Facebook is little to none. With agencies and marketers simply copying and pasting ad copy from new AI softwares that are launched into the marketplace or simply boosting page posts, just about anyone can start advertising. 

Let’s be real though, how many “ads” really qualify as an ad if most of them don’t address pain points, desires or understand the avatar enough to create strong hooks and angles to generate clicks…let alone conversions and sales?

While there’s no magic strategy, magic audience or magic set ups, the real magic does rely on crafting ads that are relevant to your ideal avatar. Crafting ads that make people say things like:

That is when the magic happens! The goal is doing what you can to drive enough traffic to the funnel at the lowest cost and intention!

3: FOCUS ON THE “WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL” TRICK

As we started scaling we had an amazing head start. With the pandemic taking the world by storm and most advertisers pulling back we did the opposite and doubled down on ads, but we started to face limitations as we headed into the 4th launch. 

Originally the client wanted to only focus on advertising in their home state. Being limited by location, gender, and age we started seeing the cost of acquisition increase. 

After reviewing the data and testing as much as we could at the ad level we reverted back to reworking the offer so we can increase the average order value.

4: ​​​THE CRYSTAL BALL SCALING METHOD - SCALING WITH PREDICTABLY AND PROFITABLY!

The goal with digital marketing is getting to the point where you can confidently know that you can put $1 in and get $2-$4 back!

Going back to early 2019, the scaling techniques that we used were more focused on horizontal scaling (scaling through duplicating ad sets, scaling through adding more audiences, segmenting them into age, placements, etc. with higher budgets). 

However, with Facebook having changed the game with the algorithm favoring ad set history and stability back in 2018 – including changing the minimum conversions needed for adsets/campaigns to fully optimize from 25-30 conversions to now 50 conversions per week; we knew we had to test and tweak our scaling strategies.

We started diversifying and testing multiple scaling strategies, resulting in 4 ways we could confidently scale. One of those strategies included what we call our “Full Funnel CBO Approach”.

5: LOCATION BASED SCALING FOR EXPLOSIVE GROWTH

One of the biggest bottlenecks we had when trying to scale this client was being locked in advertising to just the state of Texas. While Texas has one of the largest populations of most states in the United States, at the volume of speed and scale that we were going, we started to saturate the target audience.

A key part of our strategy was to open up our reach and start targeting up to nationwide which was a game changer and later again adjust to geographic targeting to keep maximizing efficiency and controlling the CPA.

6: CREATIVE VARIABLE TESTING

Creative testing and variable isolation was key to keep extending the longevity of this offer. 

Throughout testing we aim to not guess or throw spaghetti at the wall in hope something would stick. Instead we relied on letting the data guide us in what to test next. 

As we found winners we would then create multiple variations of each winning ad to keep testing and finding new winners. 

We focused heavily on not just testing the visual appeal of ads but also going deeper to testing hooks and angles.

The bottom line…

The truth is that Meta is constantly changing and adapting, but the one thing that stays constant is that the platform continues to focus on prioritizing user experience first. 

This means that the importance of creating better ads that really speak to your audience and gets them emotionally involved so that they take action is more important than ever. 

The only way to nail this is through really going deep into knowing your ideal avatar and crafting compelling creatives and messaging that not just gets attention but leads to engagement that also leads to clicks and conversions!

Understand that good or great ads are not enough to scale. 

The reality is that the only way to really reach maximum scale is to make sure your overall strategy is optimized. This means your ads, your offer, your funnel and your backend.
